Ranking tenth and not existing are now the same thing
Search stopped returning a list of links. Most brands are still optimising for one.
A buyer asks an assistant which companies to shortlist. It names three. If you are not one of them, the deal was decided before anyone visited your website.
This is not a future trend. It is how a growing share of research already happens.

You are not competing for a click
Traditional SEO optimises a page to win a position on a results page. Generative engines do not rank pages. They extract answers and synthesise them, then name a handful of companies as sources or recommendations.
Those are two different jobs. A page structured for a human scanning ten blue links is not structured for a model extracting a claim it can stand behind.

Citations are not mentions
A citation is your URL appearing as a source link. A mention is an assistant recommending your brand by name. The second one is what moves commercially, and it is earned somewhere other than your own website.
Models recommend what they encounter repeatedly across credible independent sources: review platforms, industry directories, forums, editorial. Most brands optimise their page structure, add schema, and skip that entirely.
You are not competing for a click any more. You are competing for a mention.
What to do on Monday
- Write down the ten prompts a buyer would actually type before shortlisting in your category.
- Run each one through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot.
- Record who gets named, who gets cited, and where the answer comes from.
- If a competitor is named and you are not, that is the gap. No amount of traditional SEO closes it.
The audit takes an afternoon. The finding usually changes the quarter.
